Thank you Mote Marine Laboratory for initiating Sarasota’s second sister city relationship with our Canadian counterpart. In 1990, the two cities participated in the “Jason Project”, a live video inspection by an aquatic robot of two wooden ships lying on the bottom of Lake Ontario since the War of 1812.
Kumar Mahadevan, Mote Marine CEO, proposed the pairing and Jay Crouse and Dick Angelotti visited Hamilton to meet with city leaders to tie the knot. The official signing took place there with a great celebration led by Mayor Fredd Atkins including a fabulous performance by the Sarasota Ballet’s “Nutcracker.”
Since then educational relationships developed between Manatee Community College (now State College of Florida) and Mohawk College in additional linkage between New College and McMaster University.
In the 1990s, Hamilton’s Mayor’s Larry Di Lanni and Bob Morrow flew here with the latter spending many vacations in Sarasota while establishing business and cultural ties with our Canadian partner. Many other locals including Mayor Mollie Cardamone and Sister Cities Association of Sarasota President Hope Byrnes continued to travel to Canadian soil.
