The One World Award is Sarasota Sister Cities’ premier international award that shines the spotlight on one remarkable individual and one organization that have demonstrated their continued ability to create and maintain bonds of peace, understanding, and respect in the world. The OWA honorees are recognized for their extraordinary work benefiting the community. Maestro Victor DeRenzi is being honored as the only musical conductor in the world to complete the Verdi Cycle: the canon of famed Italian composer, Giuseppe Verdi. It took Maestro DeRenzi and the Sarasota Opera 28 seasons to accomplish this feat. The Italian government has awarded Maestro DeRenzi the honor Knight of the Order of the Star of Italy. Executive Director, Richard Russell will receive the Organizational Award on behalf of the Sarasota Opera. He and Maestro DeRenzi have made the City of Sarasota the home of Verdi in America. Sarasota recognized this achievement by renaming the street in front of the Opera House Verdi Place. The 2020 OWA Award & Dinner is SCAS’s major fundraiser. It includes a silent auction to finance further exchanges and projects with Sarasota and our Sister Cities. The Sarasota Opera Youth Choir will provide entertainment.
