Celebrating the Fifteenth Anniversary of the Sister City Relationship with Mérida, Mexico

Sep 17, 2025

In September, 2025, the Sarasota Sister Cities Association celebrated the 15th Anniversary of our Sister City partnership with Mérida, Yucatán, México. Led by City Director Grisell Alemán and Assistant Director Mike Fehily, the month featured meaningful cultural activities, including radio and television interviews highlighting this important milestone.

Educational Presentation

The celebration started with an engaging presentation by Marine Biologist Armando Ubeda, the Florida Sea Grant Extension Agent for Sarasota County. He explored the ecological connections between Mérida and Sarasota.

Armando shared insights into the natural relationships between Yucatán and Florida, discussing how our environments are interconnected, the challenges we face, and how collaboration can help protect the natural resources that we all depend on. His informative talk captivated the audience and set an inspiring tone for the festivities.

Hispanic Heritage Fiesta & Fundraiser

On September 17, 2025, the Sister Cities Association hosted the inaugural Hispanic Heritage Fiesta & Fundraiser at Gold Coast Eagle Distributing. The event honored 15 years of friendship between Mérida and Sarasota through vibrant music, cuisine, and cultural exchange.

We were honored to welcome Commissioner Juan de Dios Colli, representing the Mayor of Mérida, Cecilia Patrón Laviada. He shared a heartfelt message emphasizing unity, inclusion, and the deep spirit of sisterhood between our communities.

During the event highlights, we enjoyed a lively culinary demo by Chef Amalia, delicious authentic dishes from Doña Betty’s Food Truck, a vibrant live Mariachi performance, plus raffles, auctions, and more throughout the evening.

Commissioner Colli’s Visit & Reaffirmation Ceremony

During his visit, Commissioner Colli toured key cultural and educational institutions, including the University of South Florida, The Ringling Museum, and Bayfront Park, where he viewed the Sister Cities plaques and Mérida’s commemorative tree.

The visit culminated in a significant moment at Sarasota City Hall, where Mayor Liz Alpert welcomed the delegation for a formal reaffirmation ceremony.

Both cities officially signed the reaffirmation documents, renewing their commitment to collaboration, cultural exchange, and shared values. Mayor Alpert also proclaimed September 18 as Mérida Day in Sarasota, a gesture that deeply moved the delegation and underscored the strength of this enduring partnership.
