In keeping with our recent theme of peace and building bridges, explore the Sarasota School of Architecture and discover how modern architecture and design became a tool of international diplomacy in the post-war era.
The Sarasota Sister Cities Association welcomes you to a special evening at the Selby Library, featuring a presentation by Morris (Marty) Hylton III, President of Architecture Sarasota.
Event: The Sarasota School of Architecture: Modern Design and America’s Postwar Diplomacy
Location: Selby Library, Sarasota

This presentation will explore how Sarasota’s renowned School of Architecture not only transformed the local built environment but also contributed to shaping America’s image abroad during the mid-20th century. Drawing from his extensive work in heritage conservation and cultural diplomacy, Marty will reveal the dynamic relationship between architecture, international exchange, and community identity.
A Meet & Greet with the speaker will follow at 6:45 pm at Tzeva (1255 N Palm Ave, Sarasota).

About Morris [Marty] Hylton III
President of Architecture Sarasota, Morris [Marty] Hylton III has nearly thirty years of experience documenting, conserving, and advocating for cultural heritage. Trained as an architect and historic preservationist, he specializes in closely collaborating with stakeholders to develop multifaceted strategies and programs to manage cultural resources. Marty’s research and professional work have focused on the distinct stewardship challenges of 20th-century heritage, particularly Modernist buildings of the post-World War II era, and the preparation and recovery of historic sites and communities impacted by natural disasters and coastal hazards.
From 2002 to 2007, Marty served as Strategic Initiatives Manager for the World Monuments Fund, an international nonprofit with a mission to save endangered heritage globally. While at WMF, he oversaw recovery efforts along the Mississippi Gulf Coast and in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina and helped create the Modernism at Risk program. For 14 years, Marty served as Director of Historic Preservation at the University of Florida, where he oversaw the Preservation Institute Nantucket and launched the Envision Heritage program dedicated to harnessing digital technologies for documenting historic buildings and communities. More recently, he was the U.S. National Park Service’s (NPS) inaugural Historic Architect for Climate Change. At NPS, he helped create the Climate, Science, and Disaster Response Program. Marty currently serves as an Academic Body Member of the Norman Foster Institute’s Program on Sustainable Cities, the Board Member of the U.S. National Park Service’s National Center for Preservation Technology and Training, and Advisor to The Schmidt Family Foundation’s Envision Resilience Challenge.
