Building Bridges: Pauline Mitchell and the Spirit of Sister Cities Association of Sarasota
When you think of Sarasota, you picture sunlit shores, vibrant arts, and a community that thrives on connection. But behind the scenes, there are individuals who work tirelessly to ensure those connections extend far beyond our city limits. One such person was Pauline Mitchell, whose dedication to the Sister Cities Association of Sarasota has made her a cornerstone of international friendship and collaboration.
A Vision Rooted in Connection
Pauline’s journey with Sister Cities began with a simple yet profound belief: that cultural exchange can transform communities. As Vice President of Cities and City Director for Dunfermline, Scotland, she has championed initiatives that celebrate diversity, foster understanding, and create opportunities for growth. Her work is not just about maintaining ties, it’s about deepening them.
Moments That Matter
Pauline was passionate about the mission of Sister Cities. Following in her late husband, John Mitchell’s footsteps (he served a stint as Treasurer), Pauline joined the Board of Directors and worked tirelessly in advancing and strengthening our bonds with our Sister City of Dunfermline, Scotland.
In April of 2024, she invited Provost Jim Leishman of Dunfermline to Sarasota, where talks were held on economic and trade development, tourism, sports, art, and cultural exchanges. At City Hall, Mayor Liz Alpert hosted him where they signed a Letter of Recommitment and Mayor Alpert read a City Proclamation that proclaimed “Dunfermline, Scotland Day” in Sarasota.
From organizing elegant ceremonies like the Sister Cities Recommitment Signing at City Hall to welcoming delegations from Dunfermline with warmth and precision, Pauline ensured that every interaction reflects Sarasota’s spirit of hospitality. These events aren’t mere formalities – they are milestones in a shared journey of friendship. Visitors experience Sarasota through curated tours of cultural gems like The Ringling Museum and the Bayfront’s “Embracing Our Differences” exhibit, thanks to Pauline’s thoughtful planning.
Beyond Cultural Exchange
Pauline’s leadership extended into economic development, education, and tourism. She envisioned partnerships that go beyond symbolism – creating tangible benefits for both Sarasota and its sister cities. Whether it’s exploring trade opportunities or fostering academic collaborations, Pauline reminded us that these relationships are engines of progress. During her tenure with Sister Cities, she welcomed several delegations from Dunfermline, Scotland to Sarasota including the winning Write A Play students and also led a delegation from Sarasota to Dunfermline in 2016, strengthening our ties with our Scottish Sister City established in 2002.
The Heart Behind the Work
What sets Pauline apart was her humility, passion, and diligence for our mission. She worked tirelessly every year to represent Dunfermline, Scotland at the Highland Games sponsored by all the Celtic clubs in Sarasota. She often brought her beloved Scottish terrier, Kelso along, and always had shortbread cookies on hand to offer volunteers and visitors alike as well as a shot of single malt or a wee Drambuie to warm hearts and ward off the chill of the day.
Her work is a testament to the power of human connection – a bridge across oceans, built not of steel or stone, but of trust, respect, and friendship.
Why It Matters
In a world often divided, Sister Cities offers a model of unity. Through Pauline’s dedication, Sarasota continues to shine as a beacon of international goodwill. Her efforts remind us that while borders may separate us, shared values and mutual respect can bring us closer than ever.
Pauline Mitchell was a dedicated Board member and served almost 20 years on the Board of SCAS until a stroke sidelined her this past year and took her away from us before her 81st birthday. She is deeply missed by all who loved her. Pauline is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Mitchell, her husband Ryan Clarke, and their children Kerrington (Liz), Emma, Cameron, and Caden; and her son, Andrew Mitchell.
