Could you share a bit about your background and how it led you to join SCAS?

I am a recent retiree from USF, and volunteer for OLLI-USF and other organizations. I attended the SCAS Showcase in November 2022, was impressed by SCAS and joined it right away. It was an honor for me to be selected as the City Director of Xiamen.

What unique perspectives or experiences do you feel you bring to the SCAS community?

I have a graduate degree in cultural anthropology (from The Ohio State U) and extensive experience working with K-12 schools and colleges in Ohio and Florida. After retirement, I have worked/volunteered for several organizations including OLLI-USF, Tampa JCC, and Chinese American groups in Tampa Bay. I was born in China and spent my first 32 years of life there. While working for USF, I visited Xiamen twice for work-related conferences. All these will help to enhance the work of SCAS and its connection with Xiamen.

Can you share a memorable experience or connection you’ve made through SCAS?

I was impressed by the warm welcome and strong support from the SCAS leadership from the beginning when I gave a talk about my recent travel experience in China and led the SCAS group to visit The James Museum last year.

How has your involvement with SCAS enriched your understanding of global cultures?

It gives me the opportunity to learn about other cultures related to the sister cities of SCAS and improves my work by working with other City Directors.

Why would you recommend others to join SCAS?

Because of the SCAS motto: Promoting Peace through People. This is extremely important for all people at all times, particularly in challenging times of today.
