Tel Mond, Israel

In 1929, a group headed by Alfred Mond, a British industrialist and former Minister of Health who had taken a keen interest in Israel’s pre-independence development, purchased land in the Sharon Valley near the Mediterranean coast for the cultivation of citrus orchards.  Over several years that property became the community of Tel Mond, which today has grown to become one of Israel’s most livable small cities.

With a population of 13,000, Tel Mond is centrally located between Tel Aviv (25 minutes south) and Haifa (55 minutes north). The city is noted for its lovely homes, excellent schools, and an active community center providing after-school care, karate, ballet, art, gymnastics, chess, and drama. The Tel Mond community’s highly regarded local library is named for legendary Sarasota philanthropists, Alex and Betty Schoenbaum.

Many leading Israeli hi-tech executives reside in Tel Mond, which is largely surrounded by lovely orange groves. Like Sarasota, the city supports a range of cultural interests and has a considerable senior citizen population. Since Tel Mond became a Sarasota Sister City in 1999, the communities have enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship in several arenas. These areas include student exchanges, group visits and civic projects.
